Infrared Grills

What is Infrared Heat & How Does It Work?

This is where an infrared BBQ grill makes its impact. In infrared BBQ grills, a metal plate between the food and the heating element (gas or electric) heats up. The metal plate then radiates that heat toward the food, thereby cooking it via heat radiation.

Gas and electric outdoor grills use direct heat to sear and cook food. However, they also act as a convection oven in which the heat is pushed into the shell of the grill, and the hot air moves around inside. The hardcore industry crowd will tell you that this convection process helps cook the food, but the moving air also has the effect of drying out the meal much more quickly. There may also be some convection occurring from under the metal plate in an outdoor infrared grill, but it is significantly reduced compared to the more traditional types of grills.

As a result of the lower levels of convection in infrared outdoor grills, your meal will be more succulent and juicy. Who doesn't love that idea?

Benefits of Infrared Grills

Infrared grills are relatively new to the BBQ scene and offer some very compelling benefits over traditional gas or electric grills.

Restaurant Quality Searing: The intense heat produced by infrared helps to retain more of the food's natural moisture and flavor, giving it a juicy, flavorful texture. The infrared technology also results in a less open flame and more even heating of the cooking surface, leading to a nice seared surface on your meat or vegetables.

Cook More Quickly & Efficiently: The hype you will see out in the market primarily relates to the ability of an infrared outdoor grill to maintain the food's moisture and tenderness better than a standard grill. Infrared grills will also cook food much faster, another material benefit. This occurs because the heat radiated in an infrared burner grill, gas or electric, is more concentrated.

More Fuel Efficient: Because food is cooked quicker and more evenly, you need to spend less time cooking and using less energy.

Safer For Grillers: The fact that infrared barbecue grills limit flare-outs makes them far safer than conventional gas or charcoal grills. Infrared grills are also ideal for an environment that limits the use of charcoal or gas due to a higher-than-normal fire risk, like a condominium or smaller space.

Easier To Clean: The residue from your food will most often collect on the plate that radiates the heat, so all that needs cleaning is that plate along with the top of the BBQ grill.
